KATHMANDU, Oct 15: Citing adequate supplies of live animals in the market, dealers on Thursday ruled out the possibility of price hike of meat over the next few days, when the main events of Dashain festival will be observed.

On Thursday, chicken was traded at Rs 200 per kg, while buff was priced Rs 220 per kg. Likewise, retailers sold mutton at Rs 500 per kg.[break]

"Normally, the demand of chicken goes down during Dashain due mainly to substitution effect caused by demand for mutton. Hence, we expect the price to remain stable till Tihar," said Jang Bahadur BC, chairman of National Chicken Sellers´ Association (NCSA).

As demands failed to keep pace with increased supplies, the association had reduced the price of chicken by Rs 20 earlier this week.

According to BC, the normal consumption of chicken hovers around 200,000 kgs per day. “But with the onset of festival, the consumption has declined by some 30 percent,” he added.

On Thursday, the seventh day of the 10-day festival, live goats were sold for Rs 270 per kg, according to Nepal Animals Sell and Purchase Service Center (NASPSC). While the price of mountain goats imported from China was fixed Rs 250 per kg, the local goats supplied from Mustang were sold at Rs 280 per kg.

Similarly, sheep was sold in a range of Rs 235 to Rs 240 per kg.

"Traders supplying live animals have so far sold around 11,000 head of animals for Dashain," Deepak Thapa, chairman of the Center, said. Citing adequate supplies, he ruled out any rise in prices of goat and sheep meat for the remaining days of the festival.

Nepal Food Corporation (NFC), meanwhile, said it has set prices of goats in proportionate with their weight.

Goats weighing below 18 kgs are sold at the rate of Rs 240 per kg and those weighing between 18-25 kgs and above 25 kilos are sold at Rs 252 and Rs 260 respectively, Bijaya Dhoj Thapa, deputy general manager of NFC, told Republica

According to Thapa, as the price rates set by the NFC are lower than the market rates, it has helped checked undue rise in prices of goat meat this festive season.
