KASKI, Sept 13: Participants of the fourth annual meeting of CITYNET National Chapter on Sunday have demanded the formation of an urban development ministry in Nepal, along with a concrete plan, clarity in policy and strategy for investment.[break]

The demand was made considering the sensitiveness of urban development.

The CITYNET, (The Regional Network of Local Authorities for the Management of Human Settlements) has committed itself to helping local governments improve the sustainability of human settlements. It incorporates 29 municipalities of Nepal.

Speaking at the program, President of Municipality Association of Nepal, Dormani Poudel said the struggle between the local development ministry and the ministry of physical planning and works has hampered local development, and so a separate urban development ministry was inevitable.

Chief of Kathmandu Metropolis, Ananda Prasad Pokharel, Executive Officer of Pokhara Sub-metropolis Tilak Poudel and other speakers also expressed their views.

Starting with 26 members in 1987, CITYNET has grown to become an international organisation of more than 100 members in more than 20 countries, most of which are cities and local governments in the Asia-Pacific region.
