KATHMANDU, May 22: So far, 113 people have come in contact with the police saying that they are the victims of the fake Bhutanese refugees scam. A total of 22 complaints have been registered on behalf of the victims as of May 22.
A report prepared by the District Police Range, Kathmandu, mentions that more than Rs 270 million of fraud has been committed by the people involved in this racket. In this case, initially, a complaint was lodged at the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office saying that Rs 130 million of fraud had been committed by 81 people, said Superintendent of Police Sitaram Rijal. The office then handed over the file along with the arrested persons to District Police Range Kathmandu for further investigation and action. Rijal said that more people filed complaints after that.

Till date, the police have arrested 16 people in connection with the scam and are investigating the case. Some people are absconding. He said that efforts are being made to gather strong evidence as some people are still under investigation. The police started arresting the accused from March 26.
