ILAM, July 31: Vehicular movement in Mechi zone has come to a grinding halt following the indefinite strike called by the transport laborers from Saturday, demanding action against drivers´ murderers and compensation to the victims´ families.

The laborers called the indefinite strike saying the local administration was reluctant to provide compensation to the victims´ families and book the culprits of bus driver Sher Bahadur Magar and taxi driver Dipak Pandey.

Magar was killed after the participants of a weeding ceremony beat him up while heading to Govindapur from Ghailadubba of Jhapa district on March 10, 2010.

Earlier, the local administration had promised to bring the culprits to book within a month and provide Rs 1 million compensation to the victim´s family. A joint front of All Nepal Transport Laborers Union, Nepal Transport Free Laborers Organization and Nepal Transport Laborers Union called the strike.

Similarly, Pandey was murdered two years ago by an unidentified group in Bhaunne of Morang district. The administration had agreed to provide Rs 700,000 to the Pandey family.
