KATHMANDU, Jan 1: The year 2024 saw a rise in press freedom violations in Nepal, with 60 incidents recorded, compared to 58 in 2023, according to the Media Monitoring Branch of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ).
The Monitoring Branch reported that 34 female and 113 male journalists were affected by these incidents, which also impacted 13 media organizations. In comparison, there were 53 recorded incidents in 2022, indicating a concerning upward trend over the years.

The FNJ highlighted that 2024 has been particularly challenging for press freedom and safety of journalists in Nepal. The violations included threats, arrests, and even murder of journalists for reporting news and seeking information, underscoring the risks faced by media personnel in the country.
