KATHMANDU, March 9: Traffic movement came to a total standstill in Kathmandu for nearly two hours Monday after groups protesting the bracketing of Tharus as Madhesis organized a gathering on the road near Bhardrakali.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Bikash Shrestha of Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, Ramshahpath, said the jam started at 3:50 p.m. and ended at 5:45 p.m.

“The group took out a rally from Ratnapark to Maitighar and stopped at Bhadrakali to organize a mass gathering on the road leading to the jam,” Shrestha said.

Police finally used force to chase away the protestors. The protestors who resorted to hurling brickbats at police finally dispersed.

At 6:15 p.m., traffic police were still facing difficulties ensuring smooth traffic movement around Tudikhel, Shrestha said.

The jam brought traffic to a screeching halt for two hours in Ratnapark, Bhadrakali, Tripureswore, Durbarmarg, Putalisadak and New Road areas.
