Arrested in 2003, Sobhraj has been charged with murdering two foreign nationals back in 1975. He was sent to jail after the Kathmandu District court, in 2004, found him guilty of the murder of US citizen Connie Jo Bronzich. The verdict was later upheld by the Patan Appellate Court in 2005. Sobhraj then moved the apex court.
A division bench of Justices Ram Kumar Prasad Sah and Gauri Dhakal set the date of the verdict after the hearing on the cases completed on Tuesday and ordered the defense lawyers and government lawyers to submit their written arguments by July 6.
The court said that it may defer verdict if the written arguments are not submitted within the given deadline.
If the apex court upholds the lower courts´ verdicts, Sobhraj will continue to serve his life sentence slapped by the Kathmandu District Court. But if the verdict is overturned, he will walk free.
In addition, Sobhraj also faces yet another murder charge pending in the Bhaktapur District Court. He has also been accused of killing Canadian national Armond Carriere in 1975.
