KATHMANDU, Feb 26: Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee has told the Indian parliament on February 25 that Nepal and India have given final shape to a draft of extradition treaty, according to Kantipur daily. He said the new treaty will strengthen the legal mechanism to fight cross-border terrorism. He informed the parliament that India had signed an extradition treaty with Nepal in 1953 but that needed a review in view of changing forms of crime and present day international norms. He said what remains for the two countries to do now is to put their signatures on the final draft. Earlier in November 2008 the signing of the treaty was postponed after Maoists protested against the content of the treaty.
