KATHMANDU, April 23: The State Affairs Committee (SAC) of parliament on Friday directed the government to initiate action against those involved in irregularity in the procurement of logistics including Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) for Nepal Police personnel deployed for UN peacekeeping mission in Sudan.

The committee directed the government to immediately hand over a probe report prepared by its subcommittee to the Commission for Investigation of the Abuse of Authority (CIAA) to initiate action against those failing to fulfill their administrative responsibilities and those directly involved in the procurement process. The committee, however, has not named any political and administrative persons in positions during the procurement though the SAC members speaking in Friday´s meeting argued that then Home Minister and Home Secretary should also take moral responsibility for the deal as they remained silent over the multi-million dollar scam.

The report has suggested recovering the loss incurred from the scam from the officials involved.

The committee also directed the CIAA to submit progress report on action against the guilty persons to the committee in every three months.

It also directed the government to expedite the process of making available five APCs and six vehicles, among other safety materials, to the police team working in Sudan.

The probe subcommittee had concluded irregularities worth Rs 304.4 million in the scam.

The committee handed the probe report to Home Minister Bhim Rawal. Rawal said the government is committed to bring all those involved in the scam to justice.
