Forest fire threatens Tansen

PALPA, April 9: A wildfire has swept through swathes of the Basanta Kailash Community Forest, causing fear that the fire can spread to adjoining Tansen, the district headquarters of Palpa.



Security personnel from Nepal Army and Nepal Police were deployed to douse the fire but there was no sign of the raging fire coming under control. They were using green leaves, mud and water to douse the blazes. [break]



The fire had started at 2 pm but the cause remains unknown. Columns of smoke billowed in the sky above the Tansen bazaar.



District Forest Office said the fire has spread across ten hectares of the community forest near Srinagar Danda.



Some houses in Basantapur, Kailash Nagar and Mission Hospital area were at risk.



In the meantime, an inferno reduced eight houses to cinders in the Dalit settlement in Khilji Village Development Committee-7 in Arghakhanchi district. Some dozens of cattle were killed in the fire. The damage has been estimated at 2.5 million rupees.



The fire began from the cowshed of Min Bahadur Nepali at 2 pm on Thursday. The fire was controlled after five hours.
