16 inmates killed by April 25 earthquake

KATHMANDU, May 4: A total of 16 inmates have lost their lives in the April 25 earthquake that struck the country, causing massive loss of human lives and property. As many as 74 have been injured.

Three prisoners died alone at the capital-based Central Jail when the Bhadra Prison there collapsed following the devastating earthquake, according to jailer Bed Bahadur Karki.The deceased are Mohammed Ahamad Ansari, Som Bahadur Tamang, Shangbu Sherpa, Prem Kumar Karki, Milan Gurung, Niraj Shahi, Ganesh Shah, Rajesh Pariyar, Nir Bahadur Basnet, Jagat Narayan Sharma, Arjun Nepali, Raj Kumar Thapa Magar, Shyam Lama, Saddam Rahim, Mohamad Ali Miya and Dharmaraj Poudel.

Of the inmates sustaining earthquake-related injuries, nine are being treated at a health center at the prison while two have been admitted to the Chabahil-based Om Hospital. The central jail that was housing some 2,500 inmates against the capacity for 12,000 has been badly damaged by the earthquake.

There are around 17,000 inmates in different prisons in 72 districts in the country. RSS
