GORKHA, Feb 21: Work has finally begun to repair and rebuild the police posts that were damaged during the decade-long Maoist insurgency and the recent Gorkha earthquakes. 

With support from the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction, rebuilding of police posts at Tanglinchowk and Bhachek of Gorkha district have been completed at the cost of Rs 12.5 million and Rs 9.3 million, respectively.

Before the reconstruction was completed, police personnel were forced to live in congested rooms. The newly-constructed posts have office rooms, separate detention cells for male and female prisoners and also toilets and bathrooms, according to the District Police Office (DPO), Gorkha. 

Likewise, the police post of Naya Sanghu was rebuilt at the cost of Rs 1 million. Before its reconstruction, the police personnel deployed there were operating from tents. 

The police post of Naya Sanghu was destroyed in 1997, while the one of Bhachek was destroyed in 2000, and police post of Jauwari, Aarughat and Tanglinchowk was destroyed in 1998 during the Maoist insurgency. 

According to the DPO, about 50 percent of police units are in need of reconstruction.

Out of 40 police units in the districts, 14 are operating from rented houses while 15 are operating from tents, according to the DPO. "Apart from rebuilding, several police posts damaged during the insurgency are being repaired," informed Superintendent of Police (SP) Janakraj Pandey, chief of the DPO.
