The price of cabbage, which was selling for Rs 45 per kg in June due to protracted drought and subsequent decline in production, in Kalimati market has steeply declined to Rs 6 per kg on Wednesday. A total of 325,599 tons of cabbage was producing in 19,747 hectares of land across the country in fiscal year 2006/07. [break]
According to data compiled by Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board, price of big tomatoes and small tomatoes dropped to Rs 20 and Rs 11 per kg on Wednesday from Rs 22 and Rs 12 per kg respectively recorded a week ago. Similarly, prices of red potatoes and white potatoes also declined to Rs 14 and Rs 12 per kg from Rs 18 and Rs 13 per kg respectively. However, Local Broccoli became dearer by Rs 10 per kg to Rs 28 per kg over the period.
Ramesh Dangol, an officer at the board, said average daily supplies of vegetables, fruits, spices and fishes in the Kalimati market have remained around 700 tons over the past two weeks.
Though the prices of a majority of popular vegetables declined, prices of carrots and onion soared to Rs 20 and Rs 36 per kg from Rs 16 per kg and Rs 34 per kg respectively a week ago.
Among the fruits, banana and grapes become cheaper to Rs 32 per dozen and Rs 80 per kg from Rs 35 per dozen and Rs 95 per kg respectively recorded a week ago. Prices of apple and pomegranate remained stagnant to Rs 70 and Rs 95 per kg respectively. Orange became dearer by Rs 5 per kg to touch Rs 60 per kg on Wednesday.
