Spoiling others’ programs and making accusations not allowed: EC

KATHMANDU, Nov 2: The Election Commission (EC) has drawn the attention of political parties and candidates to conduct their electoral programs within the code of conduct during the general election meeting.

The Commission has drawn the attention of the parties and candidates to the code of conduct to be followed during general assemblies, corner meetings and other publicity activities conducted by political parties from November 3 (tomorrow) for the House of Representatives and provincial assembly elections to be held on November 20.

Talking to News Agency Nepal on Wednesday, Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari, who is also the coordinator of the Election Code of Conduct Central Monitoring Committee, said that meetings and ceremonies should not be held against the existing laws, election act, rules and election code of conduct.

He made it clear that if political parties try to disrupt another party's program and make accusations against the other party, they will take action. He also cautioned them to strictly follow the provision that political parties should inform the local administration 24 hours in advance that they are going to hold a mass rally.

He also cautioned the parties and candidates not to utter any word for the purpose of defaming a particular person, not to use logos, stickered clothes, hats, caps, jackets, shirts, towels, bags and other election-related party symbols while campaigning. He also asked them to make leaflets and pamphlets only in the format prescribed by the election code of conduct.

He said that party flags and leaflets and pamphlets should not be kept in public places. He also mentioned that no more than 10 flags can be used during any event.

Election Commissioner Bhandari asked all to inform the EC if they see anyone participating in advocacy of any candidate, stating that those holding positions in government offices or are receiving government borne benefits cannot be candidates and participate in election campaigning.

The Election Commission has requested everyone to strictly follow the election code of conduct issued by the Commission during election processions, rallies, corner meetings or gatherings.
