Leader of the inmates Nar Bahadur Adhikari said the prison management has not listened to their repeated demands for resuming water supply.
The jail that has a capacity to accommodate only 25 prisoners has been crammed with 42 prisoners. The inmates cannot even sleep well due to the lack of enough space.
The jail administration says it has arranged water only for cooking and drinking purposes after regular supply was disrupted. "We have frequently communicated with the Drinking Water Consumers Committee regarding the problem. But nothing fruitful has happened so far," said acting jailor Ram Prasad Sharma.
Many parts of Baglung Bazzar, the district headquarters, have also been suffering from water shortage. "Every time we go to the Drinking Water Office, the officials assure us of resuming the supply within a week. But that week has not arrived so far," said Shiva Sharma, a local.
Ramrekha, Rudrepipal, Guthi and Awaroad, where hotels and restaurants are concentrated, are the worst hit. "How long could we run the business by buying water," said Ganga Sharma, a hotel entrepreneur. The government staffers and students alike say they have to spend hours daily searching for water.
Locals said the problem worsened after the management of water supply was handed over to local users´ committee from Baglung Municipality.
The users´ committee said population growth and leakage have compounded the problem.
