Political leaders, guardians, children and teachers expressed commitment that there would be no child marriage in the VDC. “We have made the declaration as we are aware of the degrading effects of child marriage,” said Coordinator of Lekhfarsa Village Child Protection Committee Harsha Bahadur Pun. He expressed optimism about the success of the campaign against child marriage.
According to the committee, there were 25 instances of child-marriage in 2064 BS and 26 in 2065. The number of child marriages has gone down to six in the current year. Pun attributes this development to activism against the social malaise. Following the declaration, Pun hopes, child marriages would be a thing of the past. “We stopped three child marriages this year,” Pun said.
Children are at the forefront of the campaign. They have formed groups in each community to make the campaign a success.
“The campaign is bound to succeed as we children have come together against child marriage,” said president of the children network Jit Bahadur Thada. He said around 500 children are involved with 11 groups in Lekhfarsa.
