11 killed, 20 others still missing in Gumthang landslide

68 people have been killed and 41 others are missing in landslides and floods which occurred in the district in the past two months

SINDHUPALCHOWK, Sept 14: The Sindhupalchowk landslide death toll has reached 11 while 20 people are still missing.

A massive landslide in Gumthang, Sindhupalchowk district, on Sunday morning swept away more than a dozen houses.

According to the District Police Office, six females, three males and two minors — a boy and a girl — from Birkharka, Birthaplo and Naagpuje villages were killed in the landslide. The deceased have been identified as Bhaktimaya Shrestha (63), Tyaksi Sherpa (98), Gyani maya Pradan (42), Junu BK (23), Sukula BK (24), Sandesh BK (8), Sarkini Newar (60), Dhanlal Newar (65), Heramaya Shrestha (42), Saraswati BK (5) and Karan Bahadur Shrestha (25).  

According to Superintendent of Police (SP), Rajan Adhikari, the chief of Sindhupalchowk District Police Office, nine dead bodies were recovered from the incident site, while the two other dead bodies were recovered from the Bhotekoshi and Sunkoshi rivers.

Likewise, eight people sustained injuries due to the landslide. Their health is stable.

The whereabouts of 20 people missing in the landslide is still unknown. They include Ras Bahadur Newar (48), Dilmaya Shrestha (18), Rita Shrestha (37), Daliyal Shrestha (5), Nadan Shrestha (4), Amrit Shrestha (25), Manita Shrestha (25), Rabin Shrestha (27), Reusha Shrestha (8), Padma Kumari Shrestha (60), Ram Kumari Shrestha (42), Lal Bahadur Shrestha (51), Buddha Laxmi Shrestha (50), Laxmi Shrestha (11), Kumar BK (22), Soniya bk (21), Rupa BK (10)  and Sher Bahadur Newar.

Meanwhile, 178 families in Birkharka, Birthaplo and Naagpuje villages have been displaced by the massive landslide.

So far, as many as 68 individuals have died of landslides and floods in Sindhupalchowk district in the past two months. Forty-one individuals are still missing while another 41 have sustained severe injuries.
