The EC has made final preparations to publish a 2,200-page volume about political parties in Nepal. The book will be published after the parties submit their details.
“The book will help provide a systematic record of the parties in one document,” said Neel Kantha Uprety, Officiating Chief Election Commissioner.
The EC remains without accessible and authentic records of all parties registered with it since many years ago. The book aims to make available all the historical details of any given party.
According to Yajna Gautam, Secretary at the EC, they have re-sent a letter to all political parties to furnish their historical details by November 30.
The EC has asked for the information as details already submitted were found to be incomplete and inaccurate.
“We have no authentic records of all political parties registered at the commission from several years ago,” he said, adding, “We have only rough and scattered data and records on all the parties and these could be damaged any time.”
According to him, the book will be a final and authentic record to be used for reaching judgments regarding any disputes about parties in future.
According him, the EC has for the first time in its history completed most of the steps toward publishing the book. The commission is currently busy assessing the financial proposals submitted by various firms for publishing such a book.
“We are yet to decide the costs,“ he said, “Financial proposals submitted at the EC seem quite costly and unusual.”
Most printing firms have proposed more than Rs.100,000 for a single copy of the book, which will be bulky and difficult to move from one place to another.
The EC said that Nepali paper will be used for the printing.
The EC has allocated 20 pages in the book for each party. “We have also developed an idea on how to maintain parties´ records in the book with a possibility of modification in future,” Gautam said.
