KATHMANDU, Jan 18: Senior leader of Nepali Congress, Ramchandra Poudel, has said that the country's current priority should be safeguarding the constitution rather than going for elections.

Poudel wrote on Facebook that the Nepali Congress party should not remain silent as democracy is in peril.  

"Instead, the party should go for elections only after safeguarding the constitution," the NC leader said, who has been strongly advocating the restoration of the House of Representatives though his party President Sher Bahadur Deuba is in favor of going for elections which has been scheduled for April 30 and May 10.

Poudel also said that those who have undermined the people's mandate achieved through elections do not have the right to talk about the people's rights.

The NC leader's comment comes at a time when the Nepali Congress has intensified protests against Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's act of dissolving parliament.
