KATHMANDU, Jan 9: A faction of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) close to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has staged a rally in Kathmandu in an attempt to express their solidarity with PM Oli and his decision to dissolve the House of Representatives (HoR).

The rallies from various places including New Baneshwor, Sundhara, Maitighar and Jamal reached the Nepal Academy premises and converged into an assembly.

In the rally organized by the youth wing of the faction’s Bagmati Province Committee, the supporters chanted slogans in favor of KP Oli.

Following the dissolution of the lower house of parliament on Dec 20 by President Bidya Devi Bhandari at the recommendation of PM Oli, various political parties including a rival faction in the ruling NCP, led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Madhav Kumar Nepal, have taken to the streets citing it was an ‘unconstitutional’ move. The Oli-faction, however, claimed that the prime minister has a prerogative to dissolve parliament and go for a fresh mandate.

The government has announced the new election dates for April 30 and May 10 later this year.
