1,313 firms inspected in nine months

KATHMANDU, April 16: The Department of Commerce and Supplies (DoCS) conducted inspections on 1,313 business firms across the country during the first nine months of fiscal year 2012/13 ending mid-April.



Narayan Prasad Bidari, director general of DoCS, said market monitoring teams monitored 1,118 business firms in the Kathmandu Valley and 195 firms outside the valley.[break]



Presenting a market monitoring report at a meeting held at the Office of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers (OPMCM) on Tuesday, Bidari said most of the shops inspected during the period were found not displaying price list of commodities and selling products lacking manufacturing details. Similarly, some shops were operating without registering their businesses while some were found selling expired goods.



Ram Adhar Sah, director general of Nepal Bureau of Standard and Metrology (NBSM), told the meeting that his office took action against 633 unscrupulous taxi drivers and seized 19 doctored meters. The drivers were penalized Rs 2,000 each.



NBSM also slapped penalties on 4,129 individuals and firms in different cases in the capital during the first eight months of 2012/13 ending mid-March. Similarly, eight offices of NBSM took action against different firms and individuals in 8,476 cases during the period.



On the occasion, Urmila Shrestha, general manager of Salt Trading Corporation (STC) informed that the state-owned entity had 112,000 tons of salt and 7,500 tons of sugar in stock. Similarly, Hari Narayan Sah, general manager of Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) informed that the corporation had 27,000 tons of milled rice in stock.



Speaking at the meeting, Krishna Hari Banskota, secretary at OPMCM, directed officials not to let any stone unturned to take action against those involved in black marketeering and other market anomalies.
