Yan Kumari, Gyani win silver medals

SHILLONG, Feb 15: Gold medal contenders Yan Kumari Chaulagain and Gyani Chunara were restricted to silver on Sunday in taekwondo under the 12th South Asian Games (SAG) after they lost their final bouts in Shillong, India.

In the events played at NEIGRIHMS Indoor Stadium in Shillong, Yan Kumari was blanked 12-4 in women's U-49 kg category by India's Purwa Dixit. Yan Kumari, a bronze medalist of 2010 edition in Dhaka, had earlier beat Pema Dechhen of Bhutan 8-6 and in the semifinal and Ayasha Noor 9-2 in the quarterfinal.


The other gold medal contender Gyani faced a 10-7 defeat at the hands of Afghani opponent Humarah Faisal Shah in women's U-57 kg final. In the previous bout, Gyani made an offensive start from the onset to edge past Nusrat Bibi.

On the second day of taekwondo competition, Nepal's much anticipated gold medal haul remained unfulfilled and had to settle for two silver and two bronze medals. On the first day on Saturday, Rejina Karki had earned silver and Ram Hari Mahat had bagged bronze for Nepal.

In the men's U-58 kg section, Sunil Paudel who earned a bye in the first round, lost his very first semifinal bout against Gajendar Parihar of India and finished with a bronze. The other player to lose his semifinal bout was Nishchalman Shrestha in the U-74 kg section. He was floored 16-6 by Manu Jiyorgi and thus finished third.

Similarly, Prem Bahadur Budhathoki also lost his very first bout in men's above 87 kg section against a Sri Lankan player.

In the final day of taekwondo on Monday, 11th SAG gold medalist Ayasha Shakya will vie in the women's U-62 kg section while Nima Gurung will compete in women's U-53 kg section. Similarly, Saksham Karki will compete in men's U-80 kg and Bir Bahadur Mahara in U-53 kg section.

Triathlon wins silver for Nepal

Nepal on Sunday claimed silver medal in team relay of triathlon. The team consisting of Yam Kumari Ghale, Himal Tamata, Rudra Katuwal and Roja KC, the bronze medalist of individual sprint of triathlon held on Saturday, clocked 1 hour 31 minutes 35 seconds for the second place finish. The gold winner Indian team finished the event in 1 hour 24 minutes 31 seconds and the bronze medalist Sri Lanka clocked 1 hour 32 minutes 5 seconds.

Triathlon consists of swimming, cycling and running where all the participants need to swim 300 m, bicycle 6.5 km and run 1.5 km. Triathlon is a new event in SAG and was included for the first time in the regional event.

Shooting

Nepali team finished fifth in men's 10 m air rifle. Suman Tuladhar, Kuber KC and Ramlal Gurung had represented Nepal in the event. Suman finished with 550 points, Kuber 524 and Ramlal 486 points. While team Nepal earned a total of 1,563 points, the gold medal winning Indian team finished with the score of 1,735 points. Pakistan and Sri Lanka claimed silver and bronze medals respectively. In the individual event, Omkar Singh earned 198.8 points for gold while Ullah Khalim of Paksitan secured silver and Jeetendra Bibhuti of India finished with bronze.

Only women's 10 m air pistol is yet to be played in shooting.

Two bronze medals in boxing

Nepali boxers on Sunday earned two bronze medals after facing defeats in the semifinals. Minu Gurung and Deepak Shrestha ended with bronze medals after losing their semifinal bouts.

Minu faced defeat against Sri Lankan K Anusha Dilruksi in women's 48 to 51 kg category on the basis of points. Earlier, she overcame a Pakistani player for a place in the last four. Meanwhile, Deepak Shrestha was defeated in the semifinal of men's 64 kg section. He was defeated by Dinidu Saparamandu of Sri Lanka on the basis of points. Earlier, he had defeated Afghani player to make it to the semifinal.
