UDAYAPUR, Jan 4: Women in the village have turned to traditional grinding mills (janto) and rice beaters (dhiki) after fuel crunch led to the closure of the electric rice mills following Indian blockade on Nepal.

People in the Hills have been forced to turn to a traditional grinding mill and rice beater due to fuel crunch. The fuel especially diesel and kerosene have not reached the village following the Indian blockade since last three months.

Two rice mills operated by fuel have closed down since one month due to fuel crunch in the Jante VDC in the northern part of the district. Following the closure of the mills, women have turned to grinding mills and rice beaters, said local Gorimaya Rai of Jante VDC-5.

The grinding mills and rice beaters gathering dust since the installation of electric rice mills 20 years ago, have come into operation again. "We have resumed the operation of the traditional grinding mills after the fuel crunch lead to the closure of the rice mills," said another local Chitra Laxmi Rai.

Two to three rice mills had been installed in each VDC in the district. All these rice mills have been forced to close down following the blockade imposed by India, said another local.
