KATHMANDU, Dec 24: Ncell App Camp 2015 announced the winners on Tuesday after four months of submissions and trainings. The top four winners were selected from the final 24 teams that were in turn chosen from a total of 150 teams and ideas.
Unnamed (Games and Entertainment)
When Unnamed launches on the second week of January in 2016, it is expected to enthrall all game lovers. The grand prize winner of the Ncell App Camp 2015 is a virtual reality mobile game that also won the first prize in the Games and Entertainment category.
The game will land the player inside an old abandoned hospital and he will have to find his way out of the decrepit building. To add to the excitement, the building is haunted and there are four ghosts who will lessen the user's lifespan should he be caught.
Project leader Sheetal Maharjan is excited about the launch of their game. He says, "We hope everyone will love it as much as we do. We've been working on this for the last three years. It's still only 80% complete. Currently, we're working to optimize the battery life of mobile phones when the game is on. We've found that except for high end mobile phones, the game seeps out the battery of other phones."
Pin Peaks (Tourism)
If you're a nature lover then make sure you give Pin Peaks a try. The app won the Tourism category in the Ncell App Camp 2015 and there are plenty of reasons to love it. Twenty-one-year old app developer Rohit Shrestha explains, "It was an idea that we conceived for our semester project. But since the idea didn't work out then, we decided to give it a try for the Ncell challenge."
Like its name suggests, Pin Peaks is all about the various hills and mountains that we have dotting our landscape. When the user points the camera at a particular peak or mountain then its name and other details will appear onscreen. The app will also give information on the best vantage point from where to enjoy the view of a particular peak. Shrestha says that while they have put information on the major mountains, they still have to work out details for majority of hills. The team took the help of Google Maps and Wikipedia to work out the information.
Skin Consult (Health)
Dr Rupak Ghimire's Skin Consult will surely help many people suffering from different skin disorders. Not being an IT expert, he enlisted two experts to help him develop the app that won the Health category of the Ncell App Camp 2015.
Skin Consult was born from the many sessions on Viber and Whatsapp when people sent the doctor photographs of various bumps and rashes on various parts of their bodies. Dr Ghimire says, "Dermatologists can easily identify 80% of the skin diseases just by looking at the pictures. Many people have sent me photographs and asked me to diagnose the ailment. That's where the idea for this app was born."
The app will launch on February 13 when Dr Ghimire will launch his own clinic. Users can send pictures of their skin conditions with a few symptoms and they will receive a diagnosis within 24 hours. This service can be attained for a minimum charge in the beginning. The users can also opt to choose a doctor at their convenience and the report will then go to the preferred doctor's email address.
Nidarr (Utilities)
Available in Google Play Store since August, Nidarr is a reporting tool whose objective is to fight gender based violence. You can download the app and use it to report any incident of gender violence that you see or experience. The app, which won the Utilities category in the Ncell App Camp 2015, will help you contact the police and other relevant authorities.
Team leader Amuda Mishra says the app was very important to create as gender based violence is still a burning issue. "We have no such tools to encourage gender equality and stop gender based violence. Nepal couldn't meet the 2015 Millennium Development Goal to 'promote gender equality and empower women.' This clearly shows that we need apps like Nidarr."
