KATHMANDU, April 10: Five years after his debut novel ´Palpasa Café´ became the bestseller of all time in Nepali literature, Narayan Wagle´s second book ´Mayur Times´ hit the bookshelves on Friday.

Wagle´s much-awaited novel was unveiled amidst an informal gathering at Educational Book House, Jamal. Hundreds of copies of ´Mayur Times´ promptly sold out on the first day. The celebrated author autographed the copies. Wagle´s new novel is expected to breach all records of book sales in Nepal. [break]

´Mayur Times´ evolves through the tumultuous lives of two bright young reporters, Parag and Lisara, based in the troubled Tarai. Wagle unravels Nepali journalists´ sufferings and power of resilience through these two protagonists.

"I was weaving some other story after Palpasa Café," Wagle said."But I dropped that theme as I was appalled by what started to unfold in the Tarai." Wagle´s second novella, as he says, sums up five volatile years of Tarai post April 2006 uprising.

According to Kiran Krishna Shrestha, chief of Publications Nepalaya that brought out Wagle´s new book, a total of 10,000 copies have been printed in the first edition of ´Mayur Times´. "This is not a big number in the international book market," he said."But it is very significant in Nepali publishing."

The editor of Republica´s sister daily Nagarik, Wagle, 41, who has won Madan Puraskar and Akhyan Puraskar for his first novel, has been popular even among those readers who usually do not read Nepali literature. Wagle´s ´Palpasa Café´ is all set to be printed from New Delhi and Seoul targeting Asian readers.
