KATHMANDU, Nov 1: CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal on Thursday strongly objected to the recent government decision to distribute Rs 200,000 cash to each of around 3,000 combatants who were disqualified during UNMIN verification.

"The Maoists´ move of establishing underage youths as fighters against the international convention that prohibits recruiting child soldiers and creating fake combatants is against human rights, a policy-level corruption and blatant misuse of state coffers," said a statement issued by Khanal on Thursday. Describing the government decision to distribute around 600 million rupees as a worst example of misusing state coffers for political interest, the opposition party leader demanded that the decision be immediately revoked.

Khanal also expressed his serious concern over the government decision to "misuse state coffers" to provide compensation to those security personnel who deserted security forces during the decade-long Maoist insurgency.

"Our party demands that the government immediately stop such arbitrary and corrupt activities," read the statement. A recent cabinet meeting had decided to provide Rs 200,000 to each disqualified Maoist combatant and to compensate the deserters as well.

Supreme Court moved against govt decision

Meanwhile, Democratic Lawyers´ Association has filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court against the government decision to distribute Rs 200,000 to each disqualified combatant. Stating that the decision was against the spirit of the interim constitution, the petitioners have sought interim order against the government decision.
