UML Lawmaker questions coalition partners: Are you in power or in opposition?

"At times, it feels like those in power are behaving as though they are in the opposition — it’s hard to tell the difference," said Bista, "We must rise above this kind of situation and work towards fostering a culture of coalition governance."

KATHMANDU, April 25:  CPN-UML lawmaker Gokarna Bista has criticized the ambiguous stance of ruling coalition partners, indirectly referring to leaders of the Nepali Congress (NC). Speaking during Friday’s session of the House of Representatives, Bista remarked that it has become difficult to distinguish whether some leaders in government are acting as part of the ruling coalition or the opposition.

"At times, it feels like those in power are behaving as though they are in the opposition — it’s hard to tell the difference," said Bista, "We must rise above this kind of situation and work towards fostering a culture of coalition governance."

He also stated that the question of whether the current government led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stays or goes is not of major importance. “No government is eternal. This one will also leave eventually,” he said.

Bista pointed out that as per the existing agreement, power will be handed over to NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba after 15 months. “Instead of debating whether the government will stay or collapse, the focus should be on delivering for the people and the nation during its tenure,” he added.
