KATHMANDU, April 20: The main opposition party UCPN (Maoist) has decided to ask the ruling Nepali Congress and CPN-UML to revise the latter's nine-point joint proposal for consensus.

A meeting of the UCPN (Maoist) office-bearers held at the residence of Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal in Lazimpat on Sunday evening also decided to ask the ruling parties to come up with a new proposal on disputed issues in constitution writing.

"Consensus might be possible if they bring a new proposal for consensus. Any such proposal should be more embracing than the November 3 proposal submitted to the Constituent Assembly (CA)'s Constitution, Political Dialogue and Consensus Committee," said the party's secretary Giriraj Mani Pokharel.

The meeting also decided to propose mid-July as new deadline for promulgating the new constitution instead of the last week of May as proposed by the ruling parties. "The prime minister has invited us for a meeting. If there is an agreement on disputed issues in constitution writing, we will propose mid-July as the new deadline for promulgating the new constitution," Pokharel further said.

Second-rung leaders of NC, UML and the UCPN (Maoist) have been holding informal negotiations in their bid to forge consensus on disputed issues in statute writing. The UCPN (Maoist) has warned of taking to the streets if the ruling parties unilaterally forward the agreed upon issues in constitution writing to the drafting committee of the CA.
