Two local representatives die in Udayapur, wards left vacant

Ward chair Khatri, 61, who had been undergoing treatment for a heart condition, died on Saturday night at Kathmandu Medical College (KMC). According to Rautamai Rural Municipality Chair Birendra Magar, two of Khatri’s three heart valves had stopped functioning, and he was admitted to KMC last week. His surgery was performed on Friday.

UDAYAPUR, June 23: Two elected local representatives have passed away in Udayapur district, resulting in vacancies in their respective posts. The deceased include Home Bahadur Khatri (Dahal), the ward chair of Rautamai Rural Municipality-2, and Chhabilal Jarga Magar, a member of Tapli Rural Municipality.


Ward chair Khatri, 61, who had been undergoing treatment for a heart condition, died on Saturday night at Kathmandu Medical College (KMC). According to Rautamai Rural Municipality Chair Birendra Magar, two of Khatri’s three heart valves had stopped functioning, and he was admitted to KMC last week. His surgery was performed on Friday.


His body was brought to his hometown on Sunday and cremated the same day. The municipality announced a public holiday on Monday in mourning.

Khatri was previously elected chair of the then-Bhuttar Village Development Committee in 2054 BS as a rebel candidate from CPN-UML and later returned to the party. He was re-elected ward chair in the 2079 BS local elections.


Similarly, Chhabilal Jarga Magar, a member of Tapli Rural Municipality and resident of ward 3, died at home three days ago. The 36-year-old, elected from the Nepali Congress, was also a heart patient and had recently undergone surgery. He had been on regular medication.


In honor of Magar, Tapli Rural Municipality has also declared a day of public mourning, according to Chair Dhungaraj Bishwakarma.


Previously, two other ward chairs in the district had passed away last year—Chudharaj Kafle of Triyuga-12 and Padam Khadka of Belaka-9. Their posts were filled through by-elections held last Mangsir, which saw Navin Rai and Bharat Ghimire of CPN (Maoist Center) win, respectively.
