The tuskers from Sukedangi Community Forest destroyed six houses in the village Friday alone. The displaced families are taking refuge at the houses of neighbors and relatives.[break]
Locals claimed around five-seven elephants come to the village every night and eat crops apart from terrorizing them. “They have destroyed 15 homes and damaged crops.” Kumar Poudel stated.
The locals have sought help from the administration to curb the tusker terror. But the administration has done nothing to drive the elephants away citing lack of directives from the higher authorities. “The locals are trying to chase the tuskers away by making noises but with little success,” Poudel, who is also an advisor for the community forest, added.
Locals in Bahundangi, Shantinagar and Khudunabari VDCs in eastern Jhapa have been terrorized by elephants for decades while an elephant had killed two elderly Bhutanese refugees in Beldangi camp four days ago.
The frustrated locals have also started to vent their ire on the tuskers. One elephant was one found dead in Magurmadi of Mechinagar just three days ago apparently killed by the locals.
