The aircraft initially held over Dharke in Dhading District, operating on a single engine to monitor its condition. During the assessment, the crew concluded that neither engine could safely sustain a long-haul flight. As a result, they decided not to continue to Istanbul and diverted the flight to Kolkata.
Although options existed to return to Kathmandu or land in Bhairahawa, the crew chose Kolkata to avoid unnecessary risk.
Following the incident, Tribhuvan International Airport temporarily held two other flights and an Air China flight from China bound for Kathmandu was also diverted. The number of passengers on the Turkish Airlines flight has not been disclosed.
