The unions had locked VC Hira Bahadur Maharjan, Rector Guna Nidhi Neupane and Registrar Chandra Mani Paudel inside a room for four hours on Sunday.

“Despite our agreement with TU Chancellor Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai last year to make appointments of faculty deans inclusive, the officials unilaterally appointed three faculty deans on September 16,” Kishor Tiwari, chairman of the union, said adding, “Our protest is against the monopoly of the big three parties in the university.”

The executive council of TU last week had appointed Chinta Mani Paudel as the dean of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dev Raj Adhikari as the dean of Faculty of Management and Chiranjivi Upadhyaya as the dean of Institute of Forestry.

The officials were allowed to go home after an agreement to hold further discussion on Monday, said TU VC Maharjan. “TU is not against them and we are committed to settle the issue through dialogues,” said VC Maharjan.

The union had padlocked the three offices on August 21 in a bid to exert pressure for fulfilment of their eight-point demand. The union has also demanded that the university implement the September 13 agreement with the PM.

TU on September 16 had announced vacancies for the posts of 49 professors and 57 readers. However, the Supreme Court (SC) on September 18 issued a stay order against the procedure initiated for appointment of professors and readers at the university. The union has also been demanding re-advertisement for the vacant posts ensuring quota to various marginalized communities.
