What if the doctors end up plucking out eyeballs of three out of 48 cataract patients who had undergone the cataract surgery on the same day? It naturally raises many eyebrows.
Three people have indeed lost one of their eyes following a surgery for the cataract at Ramlal Golchha Eye hospital in Biratnagar on June 23. Of the 48 people operated for cataract on that day, 13 patients are also suffering from acute headache and nausea and blurred vision. The victims have charged the doctors with negligence. [break]
Tika Devi Poudel and Bhawani Prasad Dahal, of Sundarpur-8, and Muga Lal Chaudhari, of Dulari-3 of Morang district are the ones who have lost one of their eyes.
They had undergone surgery a day after a free eye check-up camp organized at Sunderpur VDC had discovered the 48 persons with cataract and referred them to the hospital.
The doctors say they removed one of the eyes of Dahal after infection persisted almost a month after the surgery.
Dahal still complains of acute eye sore, headache and nausea.
“Every time I came to the hospital for follow-up after the surgery, the doctors told me that my eye was okay. Now that they removed my eye, the pain still persists,” Dahal complains.
Similarly, Mugalal Chaudhari, 72, also complains of headaches since the cataract operation.
“They had said that the treatment would be free of cost,” Chaudhari laments. “But I have ended up losing loads of money besides one of my eyes.”
Tikadevi Poudel too had to get her eye removed at Tilganga eye hospital in Kathmamandu following the cataract surgery.
As for the likes of Thotren Chaudhari, Manorath Dahal and Ram Maya Rai , who had also had the cataract surgery on the same day, their eyesight is getting worse by day.
Meanwhile, General Secretary of Ramlal Golchha hospital, Surendra Golchha says that he has been studying this case in the hospital.
“I was not able to keep tab with the incident as I was out of the station during the incident,” Golchha told Republica.
