JHAPA, Jan 3: Public transportation in the eastern region of the country came to a standstill on Tuesday due to a strike called by Tharus demanding induction of 15,000 indigenous youths into the Nepal Army and a separate Tharuwan Kochila state.

The organizers of the strike -- Kochila Morcha, Kochila Rajya Parishad and Purvi Tharuwan Sangharsha Samiti -- have demanded that a Purvi Tharuwan Kochila state comprising Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Siraha, Saptari and Udayapur districts be recognized as a separate state in the constitution. They have also demanded that 15,000 youths from indigenous groups of the Tarai, including Tharu, Rajbanshi, Danuwar, Gangain and Dhimal, among other, be recruited in the national army.

The strike affected transportation along the East-West Highway in Sunsari, Morang and Jhapa. Though police provided security to vehicles plying along the Biratnagar-Dharan road, the strike affected Jhapa district most. Similarly, a report from Lahan said that the strike affected public transportation in Siraha and Saptari.
