KATHMANDU, March 2: A meeting of the Special Committee on Supervision, Integration and Rehabilitation of the Maoist Combatants on Tuesday extended the term of its technical committee till mid-May, according to committee spokesperson Madhav Ghimire.

At the meeting, Prime Minister and Chairman of the Committee Madhav Kumar Nepal wanted to discuss the number of the Maoist combatants to be integrated in security agencies but the Maoist representative Janardan Sharma objected to it. Sharma was of the view that the committee should refrain from holding discussion on the matter as the High Level Political Mechanism meeting was under way.

The meeting also discussed that the Maoist combatants should be brought under the command, control and supervision of the prime minister-led committee, according to Dr Ram Sharan Mahat, a Nepali Congress representative in the committee. Mahat said the next meeting, whose date has yet to be fixed, would take a decision in this regard.

Emerging from the meeting, Maoist representative Sharma said integration is a part of the package deal his party is negotiating. "So this issue should be settled as part of the package deal," Sharma said.
