The deceased has been identified as Tabrej Alam, 18, of Tejapakad VDC-1. Doctors at Gaur District Hospital pronounced him dead after he was rushed there with the help of Red Cross workers.
According to Medical Superintendent Dr Krishna Sah of the hospital, Alam died due to bullet injuries to the kidney and other sensitive organs. "Alam received a bullet in the abdomen and he had suffered excessive bleeding," said Dr Sah.
According to DSP Rajendra Pokharel, who is also spokesperson at District Police Office (DPO) Rautahat, police lobbed three dozen teargas shells, fired 12 rounds of rubber bullet and 18 rounds into the air to bring the situation under control after the protestors started hurling stones, petrol bombs and glass bottles at policemen deployed at the BP Chowk area.
The deceased Alam was a 10th grader at Juddha Higher Secondary School in Gaur. The head teacher at the school said Alam was in class in the morning. After school was over at 11 am, he had left for his quarters. "It is a matter of profound grief to learn about our student's death during protests," the head teacher said.
Likewise, two dozen local protestors and 17 policemen were injured in the clashes that erupted during demonstrations at various locations in Rautahat, including Gaur.
Meanwhile, District Administration Office (DAO) Rautahat essued a curfew order in the Gaur area and the Gaur-Chandranigahpur road section up to Barahwa bridge from 4 p.m., Sunday until further notice, according to Chief District Officer (CDO) Narahari Baral.
Gaur has remained tense since Saturday following the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF)'s decision to intensify protests against the tabling of the constitution amendment bill.
