SPORTS BRIEFS: Trinity lifts title

KATHMANDU, Dec 19: Trinity College lifted the title of the fifth edition of Sahid Benoj Memorial Inter-college (+2) Basketball Tournament on Wednesday. Trinity defeated National Campus 49-38 in the final held at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium. Trinity´s Krishna Maharjan, who was later adjudged the Most Valuable Player, scored 13 points for the winning team.



He bagged a cash prize of Rs 10,000. The winning team was awarded Rs 50,000 while the runner-up received Rs 30,000. In the third-place playoff, Prime College defeated VS Niketan 55-49 to finish third. [break]



Teresa, Valley Public in final



KATHMANDU
: The senior girls´ teams of Teresa Academy and Valley Public advanced into the final of the Second Neric-Zenith Inter-school Basketball Tournament winning their respective matches on Wednesday. Teresa defeated Galaxy 27-11 riding on 14 points from Sarita Thapa while Sonia Limbu netted eight points as Valley Public humbled Mount Kailash 23-7. In the senior boys´ category, Kathmandu Valley beat Mount Glory 43-23 while Innovative defeated Wilson Academy 64-34 to secure their place in the final. Himal Shahi scored 20 points for Kathmandu Valley while Anup Raut scored 18 in Innovative´s win.



Namuna registers victory



KATHMANDU
: Namuna Machhindra School and Namuna Club won their respective matches in the U-19 boys´ category of the Ninth Valleywide Inter-school Namuna Cup Running Shield Volleyball Tournament on Wednesday. Namuna Machhindra defeated Namuna Higher Secondary School 25-23, 25-14 while Namuna Club saw off Pawan Prakriti School 25-23, 25-21 in their matches held in Lubhu, Lalitpur. In the senior boys´ category of the tournament, Valley Public School and Pawan Prakriti School won their respective matches.



Richmond Open Chess



KATHMANDU
: Open FIDE Rating Chess Tournament organized by the Richmond International College kicked off in the capital on Wednesday. Former Nepal Champion Badri Lal Nepali, Nabin Tandukar, Krishna Thapa, Rajan Puri, Ganesh Man Duwal, Bikash Kuluju, Umesh Sainju, Rajendra Bajracharya, Sujendra Prasad Shrestha and Prem Krishna Maharjan won their respective matches on Wednesday and secured a point each. Likewise, Bibek Lama, Himal Lama, Prashan Bhasima, Chudamani Bhattarai, Amir Rai and Ramesh Bhandari also won their respective matches on Wednesday. Altogether 42 players, including four Indian nationals, are participating in the tournament that will conclude after seven rounds of Swiss League format.



Prize Money National Hockey in Jan



KATHMANDU
: Nepal Hockey Association (NHA) will organize the Second Prize Money National Hockey Tournament from January 5 in Birgunj. Altogether six teams -- Nepal Army and teams from five development regions -- will participate in the tournament. NHA President Umesh Lal Shrestha said the association would provide Rs 30,000 each to the participating teams for preparations. The winner of the tournament will receive Rs 50,000 while the runner-up will get Rs 30,000. The first edition of the tournament was held in Pokhara last year.
