SPORTS BRIEFS: Reliance off to winning start

KATHMANDU, July 20: Reliance Academy on Friday started the First Bir Ganeshman Memorial Inter College Basketball Tournament on a winning note. In the match played at Golfutar, Reliance edged past GoldenGate B 37-35 with 18 points from Nima Sherpa.



Reliance and GoldenGate scored four points each in the first quarter and in the second quarter Reliance scored 12-5 which gave them base for the victory despite losing the third and fourth quarters 13-14 and 8-12 points respectively. [break]Altogether 24 teams are competing in the 13-day tournament.



Kathford University Chess from Saturday


KATHMANDU: University Sports Association Nepal (USAN) in association with Kathford College is organizing the first Kathford University Chess Championship from Saturday. USAN General Secretary Purna Singh Bohara informed that altogether 150 players from five Universities are participating in the championship. Top three position holders will receive Rs 25,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively while the top 15 positions holders will get gift hampers.



The tournament will be played in nine rounds under Swiss League Format. USAN has also announced to recommend the names of top two finishers for the 12th World University Chess Championship scheduled to start from August 16-19 in Portugal. Bohara also informed that USAN will conduct Taekwondo and Basketball Championships in the near future.
