Aminul Islam wins Mt Gaurishankar Chess
KATHMANDU: Bangladeshi FIDE Master Aminul Islam clinched the title of Mount Gaurishankar International Open Chess Tournament on Thursday. Islam with rating point 2268 remained undefeated in the tournament and accumulated 8.5 points. Islam played a draw with Rajendra Prashad Shrestha of Nepal in the 10th round on Thursday. He bagged Rs 30,000.
Australian International Master Aleksandar Wohl (rated 2411) defeated Nepali FIDE Master Manish Hamal in the 10th round to claim second position in the tournament. Wohl accumulated eight points during the tournament. Indian IM Atanu Lahiri edged past former Nepal champion Surbir Lama on Thursday to claim third position.
Nepali FIDE Master Bilam Lal Shrestha, Nepali Candidate Master Keshav Shrestha, Rajendra Prasad Shrestha and Badri Lal Nepali finished from the fourth to seventh positions respectively.
Karatekas off to Germany
KATHMANDU: Karatekas Binod Shakya and Prakash Kumar Chand left for Germany on Thursday to participate in the Germany Open Karate Championship to be held in Hanau on September 22 and 23. Shakya will compete in men´s 85 kg while Chand will vie in men´s 75 kg weight category. Nepal Karate-do Federation President Dawa Gurung and other officials bade farewell to the players on Thursday amidst a program in the capital.
Lama wins 110m hurdles
KATHMANDU: Yogendra Lama clinched gold medal of men´s 110m hurdles in the Chief of Army Staff Trophy on Thursday. Lama clocked 16.21 seconds to clinch the gold while Shova Kanta Jamarkattel and Prakash Kunwar finished on the second and third positions respectively. In women´s 400m sprint, Durga Devkota clocked 1 minute 3.85 seconds and set new Nepal Army record. Shova Khadka remained in the second position while Shanta Basaula claimed bronze medal. Dashi Ram Chaudhary won men´s 400m sprint clocking 50.96 seconds while Special Troop´s team that included Santa Bahadur Budha, Hemanta Dhungana, Mahabir Bhujel and Dhan Bahadur Gurung claimed men´s 4x400m relay.
