SPORTS BRIEFS: Odyssey starts with win

KATHMANDU, Nov 16: Host Odyssey International School started the Fourth Odyssey Inter-school Junior Boys´ and Senior Girls´ Basketball Tournament with a win on Wednesday.



In the junior boys´ category, Odyssey beat Cambridge Public School 30-10 with 14 points from Ashok Pyakurel. Prithvi School thrashed Deneb 23-6 as Prahlad Basnet scored 10 points.[break]



In the other matches, Valley Public beat VS Niketan 31-11, Greenland overcame Gauri Shankar 21-14, Annapurna beat Grammar 10-9, Angels´ Heart overpowered Maha Manjushree 32-22 and Reliance International Academy defeated Jagat Mandir 14-9. In the senior girls´ 3x3, Prithvi and Teresa A and B registered wins. Prithvi beat Cambridge 14-7, Teresa A edged past Angels´ Heart A 8-7 and Teresa B routed Angels´ Heart B 8-2.



Volleyball coaching course concludes


KATHMANDU: The Olympic Solidarity FIVB Level 1 Coaches Course concluded in the capital on Wednesday. All the 38 volleyball coaches who attended the 12-day course passed their tests. Coach of New Diamond School Kumar Rai topped in theory, while national player Tahal Singh Thapa topped the practical exam. Shan Wen Zhao from China had conducted the course.



Baseball training begins


KATHMANDU: Nepal Baseball and Soft Ball Association has started a training for coaches on Wednesday at Pulchowk Engineering College. The 3-day course, which is being participated by 25 coaches, will run till November 19. A coach from Boston University is training the participants.


Yala Cup Badminton


KATHMANDU: Gautam Shakya and Rajendra Shakya´s pair on Wednesday defeated Babu Ratna Maharjan and Rajendra Maharjan´s pair 21-13, 21-13 in the preliminary round of the Yala Cup Badminton Tournament being held in the capital. Likewise, Arjun Shakya teamed up with Amir Shakya to beat the pair of Rujesh Malego and Rajesh Malego 21-11, 21-12, Purna Bhakta Chitrakar and Rajesh Chitrakar´s pair overcame Sunil Barahi and Kiran Barahi´s pair 18-21, 21-15, 22-20.



In other matches, the pairs of Amir Shakya and Dibya Shakya, Amir Shakya and Yomesh Dangol, Riddhi Shakya and Prakash Manandhar, Rajendra Maharjan and Purna Maharjan, Raj Kumar Rajkarnikar and Jems Maharjan, Srijan Tamrakar and Shrawan Tamrakar, Raj Babu Maharjan and Deepak Maharjan, Rabin Maharjan and Hari Maharjan, and Bipin Shakya and Sunil Shakya emerged victorious.



Gorkha Boys into final

BUTWAL: Gorkha Boys Club on Wednesday defeated Negosida 2-1 to advance into the final of the First Madan Bhandari Gold Cup Football Tournament being held in Butwal. Gorkha Boys came from behind to win the match. Yugal Kishor Rai found the equalizer in the 55th minute after Suraj Ghalan had put Negosida ahead in the 32nd minute.



Ashim Jung Karki´s last minute goal guided Gorkha Boys to victory. Gorkha Boys will face the winner of the match between Inter Sports Club and Butwal United in the final. The winner of the tournament will bag a purse of Rs 165,000 while the runner-up will receive Rs 100,000.



Butwal Elite lifts Subroto Cup

KATHMANDU: Butwal Elite English School on Wednesday lifted the title of 52nd Subroto Cup Football Tournament in New Delhi, India. Butwal Elite, the only team representing Nepal in the U-14 tournament, defeated Nagaland 1-0 to lift the title.



The winner of the match was decided in extra time following a goalless draw in the regulation time. Suraj Hamal scored the decider for Butwal Elite. The tournament was organized by the Indian Air Force.



B Div League resumes Thursday

KATHMANDU: Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division League football will resume from Thursday. The tournament was called off by the organizer, All Nepal Football Association, on September 10 citing technical reasons. In the first match to be played on Thursday, Sankata Club will take on Mahabir Club while Shree Laligurans Pulchowk Sports Club will play against Boys Union Club in another. The matches will be held at Nepal Police Academy, Maharjgunj.
