SPORTS BRIEFS: New Summit, Suryodaya in semis

KATHMANDU, Sept 1: New Summit and Suryodaya School advanced into the boys´ semifinals of the Second PABSON Mid Region Basketball Tournament on Thursday.



New Summit defeated Marvelous 58-47 in the quarterfinal while Suryodaya thrashed HEMS 59-37. [break]Likewise, Kathmandu English School beat Anandabhumi 47-15 while Deneb eased past Occidental School 45-13 to complete the semifinals line-up.


Manandhar to head Kathmandu Athletics
KATHMANDU: Kathmandu District Amateur Athletics Association on Thursday elected a new 13-member executive committee with South Asian record holder marathoner Baikuntha Manandhar as its president. RK Bista was elected vice-president, while Deepak Kumar Ranjit and Man Bahadur Neupane were elected secretary and treasurer respectively. Manandhar and Neupane are vice-presidents of the newly-formed Nepal Amateur Athletics Association (NAAA). Though the National Sports Council recently reshuffled the NAAA, it is yet to get recognition from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).


Gauchan elected kyokushin prez
KATHMANDU: The first general assembly of Nepal Kyokushin Karate-do Association elected a 17-member executive committee on Thursday under the presidency of Jagat Prasad Gauchan. Pushpa Man Manandhar was elected as the first vice-president while Rabin Sundar Sainju was elected as the vice-president. Likewise, the general assembly elected Ramji Prasad Bajracharya as the general secretary.



Unbeaten Rajbhandari takes lead
KATHMANDU: Rijendra Rajbhandari took the lead remaining undefeated in the Open FIDE Rating Chess Championship as the seventh round was completed on Thursday. Rajbhandari defeated FIDE Master Manish Hamal in the sixth round and pulled off a hard-fought victory over former Nepal champion Nabin Tandukar in the seventh. Rajan Puri is in the second position with six points after he beat Ganesh Man Duwal and Lekh Bahadur Thapa in the sixth and seventh rounds respectively. Hamal, Nepal champion Badri Lal Nepali and Tandukar share the third position with 5.5 points each in the championship organized by Indrachowk Club.



Asian Referee Day celebrated
KATHMANDU : Nepali referees celebrated Asian Referee Day in the capital on Thursday organizing an interaction on the roles and challenges of referees in the development of football. Altogether 40 referees, including FIFA referees, FIFA assistant referees and ANFA referees, participated in the interaction. Speaking on the occasion, All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) President Ganesh Thapa said that ANFA has been working for the development of referees as the country´s football is adopting professional structure.



B division league to resume today
KATHMANDU: Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division Football League will resume on Friday. Issuing a press statement on Thursday, All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) informed that the matches of the league will be played at ANFA Complex, Satdobato from Friday onward. Star Club will take on Chyasal Youth Club, while Sano Gaucharan Youth Club will lock horns with Kathmandu Club on Friday. ANFA had postponed the league´s matches last week citing technical reasons. However, an ANFA source said that the matches were postponed because of poor ground condition at the Police Training Academy, Maharajgunj.


TIA, Mahendra Bhawan lift titles
KATHMANDU: Trungram International Academy (TIA) and Mahendra Bhawan clinched the titles of boys´ and girls´ sections respectively in the Sixth Valley Public Inter School Basketball Tournament. TIA defeated Daffodil 38-33 while Mahendra Bhawan eased past Pennwood Academy 32-18 in the final matches. Abhishek Gurung of TIA and Shanti Shrestha of Mahendra Bhawan were adjudged the most valuble players of the tournament in boys´ and girls´ sections respectively.
