Spanish envoy Pujol calls on Forest Minister Chaudhary

KATHMANDU, May 22: Non-Resident Ambassador of Spain to Nepal, Juan Antonio March Pujol, paid a courtesy call on Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment, Gita Chaudhary.



During the meeting held at the Ministry on Friday, the two discussed matters related to modernization of agriculture, agro digitalization, quality agro production, water management, climate-smart agriculture and expansion of bilateral cooperation.


Ambassador Pujol sought Nepal's cooperation in the election of Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to be held in 2027.

In response, Minister Chaudhary informed that she would consult the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in this regard.


The Ambassador showed willingness to extend support to Nepal in the areas of quality agricultural production, agricultural traceability system, investment and exchanges of technologies. He also shared various technological interventions made in agriculture in his country. He also shared the technologies applied in wine production in the volcanic region of Spain and the traceability system of olive oil and citrus fruit.


Ambassador Pujol informed that many producers, investors and stakeholders participate in the agricultural exhibitions and investment conferences in Spain and Nepal could also benefit from such events with its participation. He said Nepal has been invited to an international event on women through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


Minister Chaudhary said Nepal is working for agricultural digitalization and innovation, and youth empowerment. The Minister stressed the need of technology and climate-resilient agricultural systems, thereby establishing strong links of traditional agriculture with the market. Nepal is suffering disproportionately due to climate change, she said, adding that Nepal would like to learn lessons from Spain's experience and expertise.
