SPORTS BRIEFS: Nat'l basketball from Sunday

KATHMANDU, June 30: Morgan Cup 12th men´s and 11th women´s National Basketball Championship will start from Sunday at the Dasharath Stadium covered hall and Morgan College court. Altogether 12 men´s team and eight women´s team are participating in the championship. Nepal Army will also participate in the tournament after three years while Kailai will be competing for the first time. Men´s and women´s team from Kaski are also participating in the event. NASA, VS Niketan, South Siders, Prime, Sunsari, Golden Gate, Premier, Morgan and Kavre are in the men´s category. Prime, Golden Gate, Premier, NASA and Morgan are in the women´s category.



Host Bern Hardt wins doubles title


KATHMANDU, June 30: Devratna Maharjan and Pukar Upreti´s pair of host Bern Hardt College on Saturday clinched the men´s doubles title of First Bern Hardt Inter-college Table Tennis Tournament being held in the capital. Maharjan and Upreti´s team edged past Sudarshan Khanal and Sabin Maharjan´s pair from Academia College in straight sets 11-6, 11-8, 11-5. Krishna Bhattarai and Santosh Maharjan´s pair of Academia and Manan Tiwari and Abiral Sthapit´s pair of Prime finished in the third spot. Meanwhile, Bern Hardt has also confirmed men´s singles title as both of the finalists are from host team. In the semifinal of men´s singles category, Devratna Maharjan defeated Sardul Shrestha of Academia 11-4, 11-3, 11-2 and Pukar Upreti defeated Manan Tiwari 11-4, 11-9, 11-8. The final will be held on Sunday.



Lama wins men´s singles gold in TT


KATHMANDU, June 30:Mani Kumar Lama of AVM clinched men´s singles title on Saturday in the Third Morgan Cup Inter-college Table Tennis Tournament held at National Table Tennis Center, Lainchaur. Lama defeated Piyus Agrawal of Gunnies 11-3, 11-3, 8-11, 11-9 in the final. Anish Shrestha of Morgan and Ajesh Maharjan of Bern Hardt secured third positions. The three day long tournament featured competitions for seven gold medals.
