SPORTS BRIEFS: Munkarmi provides Rs 60,000 for pugilist diet

KATHMANDU, July 25: Sports lover and former boxer Rajbhai Munkarmi of Bhaktapur will provide Rs 200 per day to 10 players, who won gold medals during the Sixth National Games, for a month-long training.



According to chief coach Om Maskey, the training began from Shrawan 1 at the boxing hall of National Sports Council keeping in view the 11th South Asian Games and international boxing tournaments. [break]



Munkarmi will provide a total of Rs 60,000 during the training.



According to Munkarmi, he was providing the money for the players undergoing training so that they can have proper diet. "As I have been a player myself, I know that players don´t get sufficient diet during training. That is why I agreed to provide them with a small help," Munkarmi said, adding, "I am confident that my gesture will inspire others to come forward to pledge support."



The players who are currently undergoing the training are Nepal Police Club´s Sudesh Manandar in 52 kg category, Kabindra Maharjan of Armed Police Force (APF) in 56 kg, Purna Bahadur Lama of APF in 60 kg, Bhupendra Thapa and Ratna Tamang of NPC in 64 kg and 69 kg, Devendra Maharjan of APF in 75 kg, Deepak Maharjan of Kathmandu in 81 kg, Max Basnet of Kathmnadu in 91 kg, Laxman Saud in 49 kg and Rabindra Man Rokka of Kailali in 91 kg.



Pradhan, Silpakar get best awards


KATHMANDU: Sambandha Pradhan of the runner up Image Channel and Sanjiv Silpakar of winner Nepal Television (NTV) were declared the best player and best goalkeeper respectively in the Fifth Direction Nepal Media Cup Football Tournament on Wednesday. The declaration was made during the prize distribution ceremony of the tournament held at the National Sports Council premises.



NTV had defeated Image Channel 3-2 during the extra time in the final held on Saturday. Meanwhile, NTV´s Prajwal Shakya, who had scored six goals during the tournament, was given the highest scorer award. Gorkhapatra was given the fair play award. National Sports Council Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama distributed the prizes to the winners. The tournament, organized by Nepal Olympic Museum, had also featured a match between Artists and Players team.


National, Pyramid into pre-quarters


KATHMANDU: National Campus and Pyramid International College on Wednesday advanced into the pre-quarterfinals of First Bir Ganeshman Memorial Inter-college (+2) Basketball Tournament under way in the capital. National edged past Bridgewater Int´l 46-28 riding on 13 points of Saswat Singh to emerge the winner of group G. Bridgewater also secured per-quarterfinal place as the runner up of the group. Pyramid edged past WhiteGold 30-16 with nine points from Manish Shrestha. Meanwhile, United and Reliance also secured berths for the last 16.


Kayastha wins University Chess title


KATHMANDU: Madan Krishna Kayastha of GoldenGate College on Wednesday clinched the title of First Kathford University Chess Tournament held in the capital. Despite having equal eight points as that of champion Kayastha, Purushottam Chaulagain secured second place on the basis of progressive points. Sushil Chaudhary of CBM secured third place with 7.5 points. The top three players bagged a purse of Rs 25,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. In the last day match, Kayastha, edged past Prakash Nepal and shared points with Roshan Jaiswal.



Similarly, Chaulagain defeated Nikesh Duwal and Sajin Maharjan. Chaudhary shared points with Jaiswal and beat Ashis Karmacharya. Jaiswal of GoldenGate finished fourth while Suraj Pandit, Prakash Nepal, Prasan Bhasim, Bikram Dhoj Shrestha, Rajan Dahal secured fifth to ninth spots respectively. All of them have garnered seven points apiece. Saurav Pradhan with 6.5 points secured 10th position. Grishma Pradhan of Kathmandu University was declared the emerging player and Archana Rai of GM College was declared the best female player. Altogether 143 players from five universities had competed in the tournament held under ninth round under league cum knockout basis.
