SPORTS BRIEFS: Lissanevitch defends title

KATHMANDU, Dec 23: Ashlesha Lissanevitch defended her U-16 girls´ singles title on Friday in the 10th Jaykar Memorial National Open Tennis Tournament. In the final played at the Satdobato Tennis Court, Lissanevitch registered a comfortable 6-0, 6-1 win over Anuska Joshi.



With the win, Lissanevitch bagged a purse of Rs 22,500 while Joshi had to satisfy for Rs 11,500.[break]



Meanwhile, Milan Rokka clinched the title of U-16 boys´ singles after Ivannoe Lissanevitch, brother of Ashlesha, withdrew ahead of the final clash due to injury. Rokka bagged Rs 22,500 while Lissanevitch received Rs 11,500. Likewise, Abhishek Bastola won the U-14 boys´ singles title after Lissanevitch gave a walkover due to injury. With the win, Bastola bagged Rs 17,500 and Lissanevitch had to satisfy for Rs 9,000.



In the U-10 boys´ singles, Samrakshan Bhusan Bajracharya emerged the winner and was awarded Rs 7,500. Bajracharya defeated Dipesh Khatri 6-1, 6-3. Khatri bagged Rs 4,000 as the runner-up.



In the U-12 girls´ singles, Bijisha Shrestha registered a 6-0, 6-4 win over Mayanka Rana. Shrestha was awarded Rs 12,500 while Rana had to settle for Rs 6,500.

In the U-16 boys´ doubles, Milan Rokka and Yeoram Lee´s pair overcame the pair of Brahmand Singh Moktan and Suman Karki 6-4, 6-4. The winning pair bagged a purse of Rs 15,000 while the runner-up had to satisfy for Rs, 7,500.



The finals of the U-14 girls´ singles and the U-12 boys´ singles will be held on Saturday. Bijisha Shrestha will meet Bhibhuti Karki in the U-14 girls´ singles while Samrakshan Bhusan Bajracharya and Sakchyam Karki will lock horns in the U-12 boys´ category.



Nobel in final


KATHMANDU: Nobel Academy on Friday fixed its final spot in the girls´ category of The Professional 17th Gyan Carnival being held at Gyanodaya College´s court. With 10 points from Rojina Moktan, Nobel defeated Rato Bangala 28-19 to top the girls´ group. Nobel will meet Bern Hardt in the final. In the boys´ section, Xavier International, Golden Gate, National Campus and Trinity entered the semifinals. Xavier thrashed Einstein College 63-35 with 17 points from Bines Neupane. Bishal Gurung´s 16 points helped Golden Gate crush Campion 69-37. National routed Galaxy 52-19 with 14 points from Jamyang Gurung and Tenzing Yesi´s 13 points helped Trinity thump Bern Hardt 68-15.


Nepali boxers to compete in Pakistan


KATHMANDU: The draw for the Second Martyr Benizar Bhutto International Boxing Tournament has been released on Friday as informed by the General Secretary of Nepal Boxing association Rajeev Shrestha.



The tournament will start from Saturday with three Nepali pugilist -- Sudesh Manandhar, Purna Bahadur Lama and Sudan Gurung -- competing in the opening day.

Manandhar will face a player from Sri Lanka in 52kg weight category. In 60kg weight category, Lama faces a player from Cameroon and the last fight will be of Gurung in 69kg weight category against a Kenyan player.



Ukesh Nagarkoti, who is competing in the 56kg weight category, has received a bye from his opponent in the first round.



Nepal´s only medalist of the 16th Asian Games, Deepak Maharjan, will meet a player from Pakistan´s B team in the second day of the tournament. Likewise, in the 64kg weight category, Ratna Tanamg will face a boxer from Kenya. Uddhav Thapa will face a Mongolian boxer in 75kg weight category.



Altogether 134 players from 18 nations are participating in the tournament. Nepali boxers have been training for the tournament in Pakistan since December 1.



Gurung declared best archer



KATHMANDU: Norbu Gurung of the host Manang Marshyangdi Club was declared the best archer in the First Haldamba Loshar Archery Tournament in individual event on Friday. Gurung earned eight points in the final day of the tournament. With the win, Gurung bagged a purse of Rs 17,000. Jeet Ghale of the host finished in the second position with seven points while Kumar Paija of Myagdi Magar Samaj finished third with five points. The team event of the tournament will start from Saturday.



Mahabir wins after Gyan Bhairav walks out

KATHMANDU: Controversy marred the match between Mahabir Club and Gyan Bhairav Club in the Martyrs Memorial B Division League on Friday. In the match played at Nepal Police Academy, Maharajgunj, Kamal Gurung scored a goal in the 12th minute for Mahabir and Santosh Rai added another in the 84th minute. Gyan Bhairav´s officials and players protested against the referee´s decision to allow the goal scored by Rai and abandoned the match. According to All Nepal Football Association (ANFA), after Gyan Bhairav quit the game, it handed over a 2-0 win to Mahabir as per tournament regulation.



With the win, Mahabir has nine points from 11 matches and the 12th position while Gyan Bhairav has 12 points from 12 matches and the 10th position. Meanwhile, Sankata Club defeated Boys Union Club 3-1. Bikram Adhikari scored a brace for Sankata after Ashish Thapa opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Sushil Lama scored the consolation goal for Boys Union. Sankata has 18 points from 10 matches and the fifth position while Boys Union has 13 points from 10 matches and the ninth position in the league table.
