SPORTS BRIEFS: Karate team off to SE Asia

KATHMANDU, April 18: A jumbo karate team left for Singapore and Malaysia on Wednesday for participation in the Singapore Open Karate Championship and International Coaches Training and Referee Seminar. Member Secretary of National Sports Council (NSC), Yuvraj Lama, bade farewell to the players, coaches and referees at NSC.



Eight players are participating in the Singapore Open Karate Championship scheduled to start from April 21-23. Sunil Lama is competing in 55kg weight category, Binod Maharjan in 60kg, Mukunda Maharjan in 67kg and Digamber Prasad Pant in 84 kg in the men´s section. Roji Nagarkoti and Ganga Adhikari are competing in the women´s 55kg and 65kg weight categories. [break]



Parsuram Bastola and Chanchala Dunuwar are participating in men´s and women´s single kata. Mahesh Kumar Shrestha is the coach of the team while Naresh Shrestha is the manager. Altogether 16 coaches and referees are participating in the seminar scheduled to be held in Malaysia from April 20-22.



Rana duo in final


KATHMANDU: Madhukar Rana and Victory Rana on Wednesday advanced into the final of the First Citizen Bank Veterans Tennis Tournament in above-65 years category. In the semifinal matches played at Dashrath Stadium Tennis court, Madhukar Rana overcame Udaya Bishombar Shrestha 8-5 and Victory Rana beat MB Mathema 8-6.



In 55 years above singles category, Diyonam Lama and Bidur Bista advanced to the final. In 35 years singles, Anuj Arora, Sukaman Tamang, Pratap Moktan, Mahesh Shrestha, Rohit Sunuwar, Niresh Shrestha and Sanu Lama advanced into the quarterfinals.



In 35 years doubles, the pairs of Sanu Lama and Dinesh Tuladhar, Harbinder Singh and Rameshwor Thapa, Anuj Arora and Samyak Tuladhar, Sanjeev Mishra and Digendra Shrestha, Rajesh Chhetri and Niresh Shrestha registered wins.


KCM Basketball Bash

KATHMANDU: The seventh edition of KCM Basketball Bash is set to kick off from April 20 at Kathmandu College of Management. Addressing a press meet on Wednesday, students informed that the tournament will feature top 19 teams in the boys´ and girls´ category. Prime College is the defending champion in both girls´ and boys´ category.



Organizers informed that they will also conduct Basketball night games during the tournament. The basketball night games will feature all star games, three pointers and skill shows. All the matches will be played in league-cum-knock-out format. The participating teams have been divided into four pools in the boys´ section and the girls´ team are divided into two pools.


Corporate football in May first week

KATHMANDU: Corporate Management Solution Nepal Pvt Ltd is organizing the second edition of Kathmandu Corporate Five-A-Side Football Tournament 2069 on the first week of May at Gatthaghar, Bhaktapur.



According to a press statement issued by the organizer on Wednesday, 32 teams will compete in the event to be held on May 5 and 6 in league-cum-knockout format.

The participating teams will be divided into four groups of eight teams each. The winner and the runner-up of each group will secure quarterfinal berths.



The first day will feature group stage matches, while the knockout matches will be held on the second and final day. The best team and best player of the tournament will be awarded with mountain flight tickets and foreign tour package.



Teams from corporate houses and banks, among others, will participate in the tournament. The event will also feature DJ session, food stalls and fun games.
