SPORTS BRIEFS: Army win volleyball match

KATHMANDU, March 2: The Army Club won the inaugural match of the Seventh Nationwide Men´s Volleyball Tournament that kicked off at the Martyrs´ Memorial Ground, Bhaktapur, on Tuesday. Jawalakhel Volleyball Training Center also won their respective match.



Army defeated Kavre Volleyball Team 25-17, 25-15, 25-19 in straight sets in the league round while Jawalakhel edged out Thimi Municipality 25-17, 25-18, 25-20. [break]



Deep Bahadur Khadka of Army and Chandra Kunwar of Jawalakhel were adjudged man-of-the-match respectively.



Altogether eight teams are vying in the tournament. The top four teams will bag a purse of Rs 25,000, Rs 15,000, Rs 8,000 and Rs 4,000 respectively.





Nary Thapa starts APF badminton with victory



KATHMANDU, March 2: Nary Thapa opened her account on a winning note in the Sixth Krishna Mohan Memorial Open Badminton Tournament on Tuesday.



Nary defeated Sulochana Shrestha 21-11, 21-8 in women´s singles on the first day of the tournament held at the Armed Police Force (APF) Club, Halchowk. Likewise, Sabita Paneru won her match while Anita Ghimire earned a walkover.



In the women´s doubles, Puja Shrestha and Srijana Shrestha teamed up to defeat Purna Sunuwar and Gyanu Limbu 21-6, 21-14. In another match in the same category, Nary Thapa and Mary Thapa ousted Sarita Gurung and Punam Gurung 21-9, 21-18.



Likewise, Sara Devi Tamang and Saraswati Shrestha thrashed Harimaya Limbu and Meena Rai 21-5, 21-3. Other pairs who qualified for the next round in the category are Kabita Karki and Tirna Rai, Tulasi Gurung and Purna Pun, Mangala Devi Tamang and Shakuntala Nembang.



Meanwhile, Ratna Rai and Sita Dahal, Sabina Panthi and Samjhana Khaling got walkovers.



In the U-16 boys´ singles, Sachin Gurung, Prabin Basnet and Joseph Adhikari emerged victorious while in the U-16 girls´ singles Bindu Shrestha and Yalu Bhattarai won their respective matches. Nisha Thapa Magar got a walk-over in the category.



In the veterans´ doubles (above 45), the pairs of Upendra Pant and Pradeep Thapa, Devendra Subba and Hari Shrestha, and Jit Bahadur Bista and Arbind Dhital won their respective matches.



The pairs who earned walkovers are Pushpadhan Shakya and Kiran Singh Basnet, Narayan Belbase and Prem Bahadur Aire, Pashupati Upadhyay and Pankaj Shrestha, Pawan Kumar Shrestha and Rajendra Prasad Shakya, Rudra Bahadur Ghale and Suresh Shrestha, Mohan Kumar Rai and Shiva Rai, Ram Bahadur Bista and Dambar Thapa, Shyam Shrestha and Mahendra Shrestha, Kalidas Pande and Narayan Bahadur Chhetri, and Gautam Shakya and Mahesh Shrestha.



Altogether 614 players are participating in the badminton tournament with the highest cash prize. There are eight events in the tournament and the total cash prize to be awarded to the winners is Rs 665,000.



APF Inspector General Sanat Kumar Basnet earlier inaugurated the tournament. The tournament will be held till Saturday.
