KATHMANDU, JAN 11: The establishment faction of the Nepali Congress has said there is no justification for a special convention, as the date for the 15th regular general convention had already been fixed within the same period when the demand for a special convention was raised.

Clarifying the matter, the party’s Central Working Committee said the new dates for the 15th general convention have been set for May 10 to 13, 2026. However, the decision had drawn dissent from five leaders, including general secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma.
The establishment faction has argued that, on one hand, the distribution and renewal of active party membership has not yet been completed, and on the other, the general election scheduled for March 5, 2026, makes it more appropriate to hold the party’s general convention only after the election.
The faction has also made it clear that the authority to call a party convention or a special convention does not lie with any individual office bearer or member, but rests solely with the party’s Central Working Committee.
Issuing a statement as directed, Chief Secretary of the Nepali Congress central office, Krishna Prasad Paudel, said any activities carried out in the name of a convention or special convention called individually by office bearers or members would be against the party statute. He urged party leaders and cadres not to take part in such activities.
