KATHMANDU, March 19: In one of the largest job offers by any multinational companies, Sony Electronics of Malaysia has demanded 2,000 Nepali workers including 1,000 women.

Amid signs of improving global economy, the Japan-based multinational company originally had offered only 300 jobs for Nepalis -- 200 men and 100 women -- for its subsidiary in Penang and Bangi cities of Malaysia.[break]

“Due to positive track record of Nepali workers employed there, Sony increased its job offers significantly to 2,000,” said Kumud Khanal, managing director of Fusion International, one of the Nepali manpower agencies involved in sending workers to Malaysia.

Khanal claimed that it is probably the highest ever number of offer made by any multinational company for Nepali workers at a single time, after the global financial crisis eased.

The company is planning to hire 3,000 new workers from different countries to increase products to boost supplies to overseas markets within the next two and a half months.

In a first installment of sending 300 Nepali workers to Malaysia, Fusion and ACL Overseas have already completed interviews and 100 female workers have already been selected for the general worker jobs.

“Workers have directly approached manpower agencies avoiding middlemen. Most of the workers participated in the interviews are from eastern Nepal, Nepalgunj and Nawalparasi,” Khanal added.

The electronic giant -- which has been employing more than 10,000 workers in Malaysia -- had earlier announced to hire 2,000 workers -- 300 from Nepal and the remaining from Vietnam and Indonesia -- within three months. With the new offer, Sony diverted its demands from Vietnam and Indonesia to Nepal.

Khanal said all 2000 workers will have to be sent to Malaysia within 2.5 months, for which Fusion International and ACL Overseas have mobilized four more manpower agencies.

“Under the new recruitment, we have also offered opportunity to Nepali women workers to get jobs without spending money before their recruitment in the company.

“We came up with this facility as a relief for poor Nepali women workers who are not in a position to afford all costs of recruitment process before joining the company,” said Khanal.

Of the total 70 Nepalis recruited by the company in the past, 45 are still working there.

According to Khanal, the company has offered Ringgit 948 to Ringgit 1,448 (Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000) per month in addition to annual bonus ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000 per worker.

Malaysia, which was one of the worst affected countries during the height of economic meltdown, is picking up demands of foreign workers to supplement rising demands in not only manufacturing but also in construction and service sectors for the last couple of months, thanks to the economic recovery.

According to the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE), the number of workers leaving for Malaysia has increased to 54,835 during last eight months, as compared with 28,158 during the corresponding period last year.
