MAHANKAL (Sindhupalchowk), June 3: "Earthquakes damaged our houses and foodstuff. Cattle too died. We have lost our family members. Considering such moment, human traffickers have started arriving in the villages for the trafficking of girls by some alluring prospects. Be aware of them."

As Director of Maiti Nepal Bishwaram Khadka warned the villagers against the increased trafficking in human in the post-disaster period, the local girls of Mahankal VDC-7 in Sindhupalchowk district promised to remain alert to the traffickers in the village and discard their proposals, if any.

Maiti Nepal has also started to provide counselling along with distribution of corrugated roofing sheets for the construction of temporary shelters in the human trafficking-sensitive areas.

Basanti Tamang, 17, of Mahankal-7 recalled that she was offered some lucrative proposals including a good job and education in the town as well as foreign trips by some people. "Now, I will not accept their proposals. I have seen many sisters in the village whose life has been ruined after putting trust on such people," she said.

On Tuesday, Maiti Nepal distributed corrugated roofing sheets to 84 Dalit families in Shikharapur and 141 Tamang families in Mahankal VDC-7 with the initiatives of Nepali Congress leader Taranath Dahal.

Likewise, information against trafficking in human was also shared, cautioning the locals to remain vigilant against the smugglers. The two VDCs are highly-sensitive from the point of view of women's trafficking.

After receiving the corrugated roofing sheets, local Sun Bahadur Tamang said that the locals were happy from the philanthropic job of the Maiti Nepal.

"We were living under tarpaulins. Now, we will build a temporary shelter," Basanti said.

Director Khadka said that Maiti Nepal is distributing foodstuff, salt, oil, clothing, mosquito nets, tarpaulins, tents and medicines adding that they were working for the reconstruction of the temporary shelters.

According to Khadka, women and children living in the vulnerable condition are also being kept in rehabilitation centers. RSS
